It will come as no surprise that Radio Ink has chosen Entercom CEO David Field as the 2017 Radio Executive of The Year. Field orchestrated one of the most successful radio mergers of all time in 2017, which helped create one of the industry's largest companies and may also have put the entire radio industry in a position to change how it's perceived by big advertisers. It's obvious a deal was made between Cumulus and Nielsen to pay the millions of dollars the company owes the ratings firm in order for this new deal to be struck. It was not unexpected due to the importance of ratings in the markets Cumulus operates. When Cumulus filed for Chapter 11 it was announced the company owed Nielsen over $6 million. [read more]
 
WBUR in Boston has placed its most popular host, Tom Ashbrook, on leave after receiving allegations against him. His syndicated program “On Point,” airs on 300 public radio stations across the country. Here's the short statement the station released. [read more]
 
TechCrunch is reporting that Apple may announce as early as today that it is acquiring Shazam, the app that identifies songs by listening to an audio clip. TechCrunch reports it has a source that says the price tag for Shazam could be as high as $400 million. Shazam launched way back in 1999. [read more]

The Bobby Bones Show raised nearly $1.7 million during its two-day St. Jude Radiothon on December 7 and 8. The annual event aired live and allowed listeners to donate via text, while country music stars and friends stopped by the show’s Nashville studio to perform and encourage listeners to make a contribution. Entercom Chicago Country Station US*99 (WUSN-FM) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital joined forces for the US*99 Country Cares For St. Jude Kid’s Radiothon. An eye-popping $723,106 during the two-day event, bringing the total raised locally in 27-years to nearly $27 million dollars. [read more]
 
Kudos to Mega 101.1 in Houston (KLOL-FM). The station raised $400,110 during its 7th annual Radiothon in support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. During the 38-hour event, the station raised funds to benefit the Texas Children’s Hospital. The money will help the hospital offer services to children from the local community who would otherwise not have access to medical attention. [read more]
 
Univision has named Dominic Fails senior vice president of Local Media Sales overseeing sales for all of radio. Fails first joined UCI in 2014 as VP and D.O.S. for Univision Chicago. Before joining UCI, he held sales management positions at Journal Broadcast Group, NBC Universal, and Viacom, among others. [read more]

WABC New York host Rita Cosby was in attendance at The White House Media Christmas Party last week. Following his remarks President Trump spotted Cosby and shared a few private words. The two have known each other for quite some time. [read more]
